THE SECRET DANITES KANSAS' FIRST JAYHAWKERS

In 1856 a precursor to the Civil War was erupted in the Kansas Territory, and slavery settlers and pro-slavery settlers squared off in a contest to see which government Kansas would enter the Union under - one favoring slavery, or one against slavery. This is the story of a secret group that worked against the pro-slavery forces seen through the eyes of Charles Leonhardt, an emigrant from Prussian Poland who headed west in 1857 to help make Kansas a free state. Within a matter of months, Leonhardt had staked a land claim, been elected to the territorial legislature and sworn into a secret, anti-slavery society called the Danites.
